Bahrain’s foreign minister said that 80 countries have condemned Iran’s attacks on neighboring countries and called on Tehran to immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.
The statement was made by Abdullatif Al Zayani, Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, during a press briefing on September 24 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.
Al Zayani said the 80 countries had issued a joint statement calling for the protection of maritime security in the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea and urging Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping route that accounts for around 20% of global crude oil trade.
The statement said that Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to pose a threat to the rights and freedom of international navigation.

In the statement, the countries also strongly condemned the Houthi forces for reigniting the conflict in Yemen, attacking Saudi Arabian territory and targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
The statement warned that further Houthi advances toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could increase risks to international maritime transportation, maritime security and global trade.
Analysts said that tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea–Bab el-Mandeb shipping route have been among the key factors contributing to sustained increases in global crude oil prices in recent weeks.
